Journal: Khaliph Young, Media Arts Program Instructor
Some thoughts from Khaliph Young on the beginning of the Media Arts Program
After a long process, the camp finally got underway. I wasn’t sure about the type of middle school students we would get. The students were just as unsure about what they were getting into. We wanted to get them and keep them engaged as much as possible, and we did by letting them unbox the equipment and set it up just to get a feel for things out the gate. To our surprise, one of the students even brought their own camera and has an interest in video and photography, so when it was time for our first interview with one of the guests, Jordan took the role of lead cameraman.
The first couple of weeks have brought a lot of joy to my heart to be able to share my 39 years of television experience with the students. To be able to watch one of the shy students take the lead on shooting the behind the scenes and social media content has been amazing. At times it can be a challenge keeping a couple of the kids in tune, but, overall, the interest to participate is there and I believe they are just as excited to move to the next phase of production and postproduction.
